IBAU Supports Child’s i Foundation to Strengthen Families and Protect Vulnerable Children

Date: 30th October 2025
Venue: Four Points Hotel, Kampala

The Insurance Brokers Association of Uganda (IBAU) participated in the Child’s i Foundation Annual Fundraising Breakfast—an inspiring engagement that highlighted the urgent need to keep children in safe, loving families rather than institutional care. The event shed light on the root causes of family separation, including poverty, limited access to essential services, community vulnerability, and gaps in psychosocial support.

A recurring message throughout the discussions was clear: every child deserves to grow up in a family environment that provides love, identity, stability, and belonging and preventing separation requires addressing the systemic challenges that put families at risk.

Child’s i Foundation urged that many children currently living in orphanages are not orphans but victims of poverty and broken support structures. Their community-based model focuses on empowering families through livelihood support, case management, emotional counselling, and emergency assistance ensuring separation is prevented before it occurs.

Key Highlights

1. Strengthening Families as the Foundation of Child Protection

Speakers emphasized that strong families are the first and most effective line of defense in child protection. Institutions, no matter how well-intentioned, cannot replace the love and identity provided within a home. The conversations underscored the importance of shifting from institutional care to community-based, family-first solutions.

2. Tackling Poverty as the Leading Driver of Separation

Poverty emerged as the most significant cause of family breakdown. Parents often make the painful decision to place their children in institutions not due to lack of love, but because they lack resources, support networks, or opportunities. Speakers highlighted the urgency of investment in social protection, multi-dimensional poverty interventions, and early support for vulnerable households.

3. Strengthening Community Systems and Local Leadership

Members stressed the importance of empowering community structures like probation officers, savings groups, community volunteers, and social welfare systems to provide families with the financial literacy, psychosocial care, and resilience they need to stay together.

4. Sustainable, Long-Term Support for Families

The event also showcased ongoing programs that help vulnerable households navigate crises, build stability, and join savings groups that foster long-term independence. These efforts ensure that families can overcome hardship without being forced to separate from their children.

Voices from the Event

David Adoke, Country Director at Child’s i Foundation, reaffirmed the organization’s core mission: “Our goal is simple but profound: every child belongs in a family, every family is supported, and every community is strong.”

The Outgoing CEO of Childs I foundation, Christopher Muwanguzi emphasized collective responsibility: “It doesn’t take a crowd to make change. Even small contributions and collective action can transform a family’s life and strengthen an entire community.”

Susan, Managing Director at Nation Media Group, offered a values-driven reminder: “Let us each do what we can to care for these children in our various capacities. I say all this for God and my country.”

As IBAU, we recognize that protecting families goes beyond financial security, it requires supporting the systems and organizations dedicated to keeping children safe, families together, and communities strong.

Our participation in the Fundraising Breakfast reflects our commitment to social responsibility and child protection. IBAU contributed to key initiatives, including the Legacy Endowment Fund, which supports long-term programs designed to help children thrive within safe family environments.

We extend heartfelt appreciation to our members Kenbright Reinsurance Brokers, WTW, and Sky Reinsurance Brokers for joining us and generously contributing to the cause.
