IBAU Successfully Hosts the CEO Breakfast Meeting Powered by Prudential Uganda

On 24th June 2026, the Insurance Brokers Association of Uganda (IBAU), in partnership with Prudential Uganda, successfully hosted the CEO Breakfast Meeting at Fairway Hotel.

The event brought together insurance brokers and the Prudential Uganda team for a morning of insightful discussions on corporate governance, leadership, professional development, and emerging opportunities within Uganda’s insurance sector.

Opening Remarks

In her opening remarks, IBAU Chairperson Ritah Mutesi Kabayiza emphasized that collaboration and capacity building will be at the heart of the Board’s agenda, noting that the broker of tomorrow must be equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a changing insurance landscape.

Ritah also reiterated the Association’s commitment to helping brokers regain market share by exploring new opportunities, particularly in life assurance and other emerging areas of business, while encouraging members to embrace continuous learning and professional development.

She further announced that the CEO Breakfast Meetings will be held regularly as a platform for knowledge sharing, networking, and discussions on topical industry issues that matter to insurance brokers.

Prudential Reaffirms Commitment to Industry Growth

During the engagement, Ayitevie Tetteh, CEO of Prudential Uganda, challenged industry players to look beyond Uganda’s low insurance penetration rate and instead focus on the immense opportunities that exist within the market.

He noted that millions of individuals, households, and businesses remain uninsured or underinsured, presenting a significant opportunity for industry growth.

Tetteh emphasized the importance of innovation, collaboration, and customer-focused solutions in expanding insurance coverage, while encouraging industry stakeholders to explore new market segments and develop products that respond to evolving customer needs.

He also reaffirmed Prudential’s commitment to working with brokers and other stakeholders to increase insurance awareness, improve access to insurance solutions, and contribute to the growth of the sector.

“We can either focus on low insurance penetration, or we can see the vast sea of opportunity before us.”

Corporate Governance in a Changing World

Guest speaker Trevor Ariho, CEO of the League of East African Directors (LEAD), delivered a presentation on Corporate Governance: Emerging Local and International Trends.

Ariho challenged boards and business leaders to move beyond reviewing historical performance and instead focus on preparing organizations for future opportunities and risks.

He highlighted emerging risks such as cyber threats, artificial intelligence, climate change, and reputational risks, emphasizing that governance structures must evolve to respond to an increasingly complex operating environment.

He further encouraged organizations to adopt competence-based board appointments, strengthen governance practices, and invest in continuous board development.

Ariho noted that good governance should not merely protect value but create value, adding that future organizational success will depend on how effectively boards anticipate risks and position their institutions for long-term growth.

“The purpose of governance is not to explain the past; it is to prepare for the future.”

Closing Remarks

In her closing remarks, Chairperson Ritah Mutesi Kabayiza provided members with an update on the Board’s progress during its first 30 days in office and outlined several strategic priorities for the new term.

She highlighted the Board’s focus on strengthening partnerships and collaboration, enhancing member welfare, advancing professional standards, and increasing the visibility and market share of insurance brokers.

Among the initiatives announced were plans to establish an umbrella medical insurance scheme and funeral cover for members, strengthen stakeholder engagement, conduct member surveys to better understand industry needs, and establish dedicated communication channels for member feedback and support.

The Chairperson also revealed that preparations for the 9th IBAU Conference are already underway and that the Association is restructuring its Secretariat to better support members and deliver on its strategic objectives.

As IBAU prepares to celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2027, Ritah shared the Association’s aspiration to secure a permanent home, describing it as a key milestone in strengthening the institution’s legacy and future sustainability.

She concluded by calling on members and partners to actively support the Association’s vision of building a stronger, more professional, and more influential brokerage fraternity capable of driving insurance growth in Uganda.

Supporting Men’s Mental Health

Beyond the discussions on industry growth and corporate governance, the CEO Breakfast Meeting also highlighted the importance of mental wellbeing.

In recognition of Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, all men in attendance received stress balls carrying the message “Men’s Minds Matter.”

The initiative served as a reminder that effective leadership begins with personal wellbeing and that supporting mental health is essential to building stronger professionals, leaders, and organizations.

Looking Ahead

The CEO Breakfast Meeting marked the beginning of what IBAU intends to be a regular platform for engagement, learning, and collaboration among insurance industry stakeholders.

IBAU extends its appreciation to Prudential Uganda for partnering with the Association to deliver a successful CEO Breakfast Meeting and to all members and stakeholders whose participation contributed to meaningful discussions on the future of the insurance industry.
